First three astronauts are sent to China's new space station馃懡馃殌
Three Chinese astronauts
are being sent to China’s newest low orbiting space station, called Tiangong or
Heavenly Palace, this Thursday at 9:22 a.m. Beijing time. “Thursday’s launch
begins the first crewed space mission in five years for an increasingly
ambitious space program” (Sam McNeil Associated Press, ABC News, par.8). Their Shenzhou-12
spaceship will be launched by a Long March-2F Y12 rocket from the Jiuquan Space
Launch Center located in the Gobi Desert. “The mission, called Shenzhou-12 or
Divine Vessel, is the first of four planned Tiangong missions, according to
state media, and marks a significant milestone in China's rapidly expanding
space program” (Ben Westcott and Yong Xiong, CNN, par.4). The crew consists of
three men: Nie Haisheng, Liu Boming, and Tang Hongbo. All assured to have great trust in the mission
and each other. Nie Haisheng, 56, is the veteran of this mission since this is
his third time traveling to space. He was present in two of China’s first
expeditions in 2005 and 2013. Liu Boming, 54, was also part of one of China’s
first expeditions in 2008 and “helped Zhai Zhigang become the first Chinese
astronaut to conduct a spacewalk” (Ben
Westcott and Yong Xiong, CNN, par.7). Tang Hongbo,45, is making his first trip
to space after being chosen from the second group of astronauts from 2010. He
mentions that there is outmost pressure in his first and current expedition.
However, he believes this brings motivation and confidence. “While the first
Tianhe crew are all men, women will be part of future crews, officials have
said” (Sam McNeil Associated Press, ABC News, par.10). “According to an
official at China's Manned Space Engineering Office, the astronauts will
conduct two spacewalks to install equipment on the space station during their
mission” (Ben Westcott and Yong Xiong, CNN, par.9). Once completed, China’s space
station is expected to be used for 10 or 15 years.
